Tangier – Princess Lalla Salma, Chairwoman of the Lalla Salma Foundation for Cancer Prevention and Treatment, inaugurated on Friday the reproductive health, and breast and cervical cancer detection center in Tangier.
Princess Lalla Salma toured the different facilities of the center, including the head nurse’s office, rooms of check-up , ultrasound, mammography, colposcopy and the pharmacy.
The princess also visited the regional office of the Lalla Salma Foundation for Cancer Prevention and Treatment located in the center, as well as an adjacent unit for training.
The center is part of the national plan for cancer prevention and monitoring (2010-2019) elaborated in collaboration with the health ministry.
The building and equipment of the center, of a surface area of 800 square meters, totaled 8.5 million dirhams, funded by the Tangier ArbaPro Company (6.8 mln MAD) and the Lalla Salma Foundation (1.7 mln MAD).
The center can provide up to 6,000 consultations per year for breast and cervical cancer screening and early detection. It was constructed under the extension of the breast and cervical cancer early detection program at the Tangier-Assilah prefecture.
The program of breast cancer screening and diagnosis, which has been generalized to the whole national territory, targets a population of around 3.4 million women.
The activities of the cervical cancer early detection program are currently provided in six regions: Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zair, Meknès-Tafilalet, Fez-Boulemane, Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz, the Great Casablanca and Gharb-Chrarda-Beni Hssen and cover a target population of approximately 1.5 million women.
Concerning the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah, the program for breast and cervical cancer early detection targets a population of 95,000 women aged 45-69 years for breast cancer screening, and nearly 135,000 women aged 30-49 for cervix cancer.
