ANTANANARIVO– Hery Rajaonarimampianina wins 53.3 percent of votes, unofficial results say.
Former Finance Minister Hery Rajaonarimampianina won the second round of the presidential election held on 20 December in African island state of Madagascar, unofficial results showed.
Election Commission has counted 99 percent of votes, but the final results will be published on January 7, 2014. According to unofficial results, former Finance Minister Hery Rajaonarimampianina won 53.3 percent of votes in the second round against his rival former Minister of Health and Sport Jean Louis Robinson (46.7%), who claimed the elections to be manipulated.
Madagascar became subject of international sanctions after Andry Rajoelina overthrew democratically elected president Marc Ravalomanana with the help of the army in 2009. Ravalomanana supported Robinson, whereas the coup administration supported Rajaonarimampianina.
These elections are considered as a big leap forward in regaining the confidence of supporting countries, international investors and tourists for the nearly bankrupt country.
Meanwhile, the members of the 119 seat parliament of Madagascar were also determined.
