United Nations – The events in Homs reminder of danger civilians and aid workers face every day in Syria, says UN humanitarian chief.
UN and humanitarian partners will not be deterred from doing their best to bring critical aid to people – but we need safety guarantees for aid convoys, said Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos after a UN aid convoy was attacked in the besieged Old City of Homs in Syria, on Saturday.
“Today’s events in Homs are a reminder of the danger civilians and aid workers face every day in Syria; 250,000 people are not getting food or the medical care needed,” Amos said on her Twitter page.
“I am deeply disappointed that the three-day ceasefire agreed between the parties was broken today (Saturday) and aid workers (have been) deliberately targeted,” Amos said in a statement released late on Saturday.
The Syria government and opposition have agreed a three-day ceasefire to allow humanitarian access to the besieged Old City of Homs.
Homs has been under siege for over a year.
The UN has not confirmed yet which side attacked the aid workers.
