Rabat – The amount of liquor imported into Morocco fell in the first half of 2015, according to recent figures released by the Moroccan Exchange Office.
The figures revealed that the value of imports for alcoholic beverages from January to June 2015, barely reached MAD 137 million, compared to MAD 206 million in the same period last year.
According to Jeune Afrique Magazine, the fall is explained by previous reports which reveal that sales of liquor in Morocco decreased by 13 percent in the recent months.
The magazine attributes the decrease inalcohol sales in Morocco to a drop in demand because of the increased government taxes on alcoholic beverages.
The fact that Ramadan occurred in the summer, when alcohol is usually consumed in high quantities, was also a contributing factor.
Moreover, Marjane which has thirty-two supermarkets across Morocco has bannedthe sale of alcohol in all its supermarkets, causing a notable drop in alcohol sales.
These reasons contributed to the national drop in alcohol sales, as well the decline of wine-makers’ profits, which fell by approximately 43%.
