Rabat – Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra has claimed that Algeria remains neutral regarding the so-called Western Sahara issue, denying any support by Algiers to Polisario.

“Algeria neither support nor reject the autonomy proposal proposed by Morocco to the Polisario Front,” Ramtane Lamamra told Alarabya TV channel.

Algeria’s top diplomat said that the proposal is linked to the conflicting parties and the United Nations, and that Algeria is not a party in this matter.

“Morocco made the autonomy proposal to the United Nations in 2007, and on the same day Polisario front submitted a different solution to the disputed territory,” Lamamra said.

“The United Nations said that the Security Council tasked the Secretary General to look for a solution based on the two projects,” he added.

“Algeria is not a party, and is not required to take a position,” Lamamra concluded.

This statement has been labeled by Moroccan observers as “surprising” and “unprecedented”, as it is made by the Algerian Foreign Minister who only a few days ago described King Mohamed VI’s speech as “a bet on the worse” before adding that Algeria does not practice “Megaphone Diplomacy.”

This statement comes only a few hours after Amar Saadani, Secretary General of Algeria’s ruling National Liberation Front (FLN), said in an interview for the first time that escalation would not benefit Morocco nor Algeria.

Amar Saadani also called upon Algeria to reconsider its stances on the so-called Western Sahara and strengthen its ties with Morocco.

Following these unprecedented remarks made by Algerian officials, multiple Moroccan media outlets have suggested that Morocco’s support for Kabylie at the United Nations has pushed the leaders of Algeria to soften their stance against Morocco.
