Rabat – January 18, 2016, the Moroccan Arts community turns in orphaned. Leila Alaoui, one of its most brilliant, sensitive, insightful daughters has been taken away by terror.

Her commitment to put her art at the service of human rights had taken her to what was to become the setting of her last battle field. Unfair and tragic battle it was.

Her passion, before a herd of criminals, armed to the teeth, took her life, was to bring in her photography the life of the most unseen out for all to see and love. Her skill was to bring to the awareness of all the most forgotten of the world.

Her art was to create responsibility in those who have never had it or have lost it ignoring that others are humans, too.

With her camera, she seized the light in the souls, the feelings in the hearts, the frustrations of the past and the hopes for the future. Her science was to immortalize the ephemeral expressions that never happen twice.

Her work captured the truth in the breaths that inspire trust. Citizen of the world, her work has been displayed in the four continents and in the most prestigious events and placed an artist as young as she was could have ever dreamed of.

Humanity was her nation. Leila Alaoui, the artist photographer the terrorists have extracted to life in Ouagadougou, was loved, respected and cherished by all those who have known her. No one who has met her, even for a short while, will never forget her smile, her joy and her concern for others.

All losses are painful and heartbreaking; hers, too premature and unwarranted, is also bitter and will always be remembered with a feeling of rage, anger and a tear in the heart.

Terrorism should have been eradicated before it took her…. May she rest in peace and may her parents, family and friends find patience and resignation in remembrances of her kindness, goodness and love for them.
