Taroudant – Moroccan photographer Leila Alaoui was seriously injured in the attack that targeted on Friday night a hotel in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital.

The photographer’s mother told le360 that her daughter was among those evacuated by the Burkinabe security forces from the hotel, adding that she was “seriously injured.”

The mother said that Leila was having dinner when the assault started.

“She was shot twice in the leg and her arm,” the mother said, adding that her daughter “lost a lot of blood before being evacuated.”

The same source added that Leila was admitted in a well-equipped hospital where she received the necessary medical treatment.

“Doctors detected a blood clot in her lungs, which caused her a breathing complication, ” Alaoui’s mother said.

She added that the Moroccan artist underwent major surgery in the lung and colon. “Her condition is stable now and we hope that she recover soon,” she said.

According to the same source, Alaoui was in Ouagadougou in working visit to take photographs for Amnesty International.

Born in Paris in 1982, Leila Alaoui is a French-Moroccan photographer and video artist whose experiences across different cultural and geographic environments inform her critical and creative practice.

Militant gunmen from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) stormed on Friday night a hotel in the capital city of Burkina Faso. The terrorists killed more than 20 people, and took 126 people as hostages, who later freed by French and Burkinabe forces.
