Rabat – The Moroccan Army declined in the annual power index ranking of the strongest armies in the world prepared by Global Fire Power.

Compared to its rank in 2015, the Moroccan Army declined by seven places in 2016; falling from 49 out of 126 countries in 2015 to 56 this year.

Despite allotting a budget of $3.4 billion to maintain its position among the fifty most powerful armies, Morocco has slightly stepped back in 2016.

The report says that the Moroccan army has 200,000 active frontline personnel and 150,000 active reserve personnel. As far as land power is concerned, the Moroccan army has 1215 tanks, 2348 armored fighting vehicles, 448 self-propelled guns, 192 towered artillery, and 72 multiple-launch rocket systems.

Moroccan Armed Forces air power is constituted of a total of 282 aircrafts, 50 interceptors, 50 fixed-winged attack aircrafts, 158 transport aircrafts, and 128 helicopters.

As for naval power, Morocco has a total of 121 naval fighters and 6 frigates.

According to Global Fire Power, Morocco is the seventh greatest military power in Africa. Egypt maintained its position as the first military power in Africa, followed by Algeria and Ethiopia. On the international level, the United States came first, followed by Russia, China, India, and France.

The Global Fire Power does not take the nuclear power into account. A country’s military power is  based on conventional weaponry, in addition to other factors such as economic strength, border size, self-sustainability, water access, etc.
