Rabat – Runners Nikki Hamblin and Abbey D’Agostino displayed the Olympic Spirit in Rio’s 5000m, after they tripped together on August 16.
New Zealand runner, Nikki Hamblin, stumbled during the women’s 5,000-meter semi-final, taking down with her USA runner, Abbey D’Agostino. D’Agostino was the first to get up and checked on her fellow runner, who then got up.
Moments later, it appeared that D’Agostino was too injured to continue the race. She fell again, but Hamblin helped her up. The two athletes finished the race last crossing the finish line to great applause by the crowd.
In an interview later with One News Now, Hamblin said that D’Agostino had tapped on her shoulder and urged her to get up and finish the race. Commenting on D’Agostino having finished the race despite her injured knee, “I know she is young, and I know she will have many more opportunities with determination like that.”
