Rabat – Morocco submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in parallel to the ratification of the Paris Agreement on September 21, 2016, said on Monday a statement by the ministry in charge of the environment.
To elaborate its contribution, Morocco led a broad process of consultation with all parties involved, with the support of the UNDP and the German Cooperation, said the statement, noting that this process helped to review policies and programs developed by Morocco to combat global warming and set the country’s goals under its contribution.
Concerning mitigation, Morocco pledged to slash its greenhouse emissions in 2030 by 42% compared to emissions forecast by the year 2030, it said, noting that this objective can be achieved only if Morocco has new sources of funding and an additional support to the one mobilized over the past years.
As for adjustment, the ministry underlined that the vulnerability of Morocco towards climate change was highlighted, stressing that resilience objectives with figures and the cost of implementation were identified for the most vulnerable sectors, which have elaborated strategies of adjustment to climate change, notably agriculture, water, forest and fisheries.
Through NDCs, countries put forward their agreements in the context of their own national circumstances, capabilities and priorities, within the ambition to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions enough to keep global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius. They contain steps taken towards emission reductions and aim to address steps taken to adapt to climate change impacts, and what support the country needs, or will provide, to address climate change.
