Casablanca – Morocco Mall was the scene of a shopper stampede yesterday during the opening of a French clothing retail store which promised the first 100 visitors a 500-dirham coupon.
Thousands of impatient shoppers created mayhem in the mall as they rushed past security guards to be among the first 100 visitors to win a coupon.
A number of women fainted due to the unbearable state of congestion. No one was reported seriously injured.
The rushing shoppers began lining up three hours before the opening.
Upon the mall doors being opened, they bypassed the ordinary security procedures and dashed through the escalator and waited in front of the shop. Another crush of the crowd was produced as the shop opened its doors.
The French clothing retailer, Tati, had promised earlier a coupon and a series of exceptional discounts to the first 100 visitors of its first shop in Morocco. The retailer considers it opening ceremony a success:
“The opening of Tati, Casablanca. Thousands of people at the opening. Congratulations to our teams and long live Tati in Morocco,” stated the retailer’s president in a Tweet forty minutes after the launch.
Tati has replaced the female clothing and accessories retailer Galeries Lafayette in the 1500 meter-square site. This is the Tati’s first in Morocco and third in Africa.
Moroccan social media users have extensively shared the videos of the event.
