Rabat – Mohammed Zher, Al-Hoceima’s Governor felt obligated yesterday to join the Al-Hoceima population as it took to the street in the early hours of the morning to protest the tragic death of a 31-year-old fish-seller who was killed after throwing himself in a garbage truck when authorities confiscated his merchandise.

An acute wave of indignation followed the death, prompting Al-Hoceima citizens to demand the urgent presence of Al-Hoceima’s Governor in the area to open an investigation to uncover the exact details behind the fish-seller’s death.

In a video posted on YouTube Saturday morning, Zher appears with Al-Hoceima’s prosecutor to address the protestors.

At the beginning, Zher expressed his sympathy and sorrow for the deceased’s relatives and the Al-Hoceima population at large. He then made the following announcement, “The deputy of Al-Hoceima’s fishing department was sacked.”

Protesters demanded swift action to restore the rights of the deceased.

In response, Al-Hoceima’s prosecutor asserted, “The authorities would open an accurate and transparent investigation and will apply the law to guarantee the deceased’s rights.”

The nine-minute video shows the intervention of one of the protestors asking for “… the pledge that can reassure them to see the legitimate application of the law.”

“The demonstrators believe in the law, but does not believe in the process of applying it,” the protestor added.

It is hoped this action and a thorough investigation will help to restore calm to the city of Al-Hoceima, which only yesterday found itself in turmoil following the death of the fish-seller, whose photo inside the garbage truck has sparked an outrage among social media users, who shared the photo widely and expressed their sympathy for him.
