Casablanca — New York Mayor De Blasio has said the city would sue should Trump’s administration institute a Muslim registry, reports NY Daily News.
In a speech delivered on Monday, November 21 at Cooper Union, De Blasio said, “We will sue to block it,” in reference to Trump’s proposal to create a Muslim registry to keep track of all Muslims in US territory.
“We will use all the tools at our disposal to stand up for our people,” De Blasio added.
Trump’s Chief of Staff Reince Priebus had only one day prior stated, in an interview on “Meet the Press,” that they wouldn’t rule the Muslim registry idea out.
Just two days ago, President-elect Donald Trump was seen posing for pictures with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach at the clubhouse of Trump International Golf Club. Kobach, known for his book on the creation of a Muslim registry, may potentially be the next leader of the Department of Homeland Security. During Trump’s campaign, Kobach was vocal about the need for a tracking system.
During his speech, De Blasio also added that the city would refuse federal orders that would tear families apart, disobey the Justice Department on stop and frisk policies, and would never give the federal government NYC ID records, reports CBS News.
“The president-elect talked during the campaign about the movement that he had built,” de Blasio added. “Now its our turn to build a movement, a movement of the majority,” he continued.
This adds to New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s statement on Sunday, delivered at Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church, which stated that “New York has a special responsibility. We have always been the progressive capital of this country.”
“We have always been the social conscience,” Cuomo continued, adding that “We know what it is to stand up and remind this country what it means to be an American. That our core American belief is that we are one nation, under God, indivisible, where there is liberty and justice for all.”
