Casablanca — John Kerry, the United States Secretary of State, will attend COP22 starting November 15 and will be delivering a speech about climate change.
In a statement, spokesperson for the United States Department of State John Kirby said that “Kerry will be in Marrakech on November 15 and 16 to participate in the 22nd United Nations conference of the parties.”
Kirby also announced that Kerry would be making a speech on the importance of fighting climate change across the world.
With no statement made from Obama concerning his attendance to the COP22, which is set to run from November 7 to 18, Kerry’s announcement is a reassuring one; U.S. participation in fighting climate change is a crucial one, as this is COP22 is focused on putting the decisions made during COP21 into action. As a major world power, the United State’s participation is important.
This is, however, one of Kerry’s last visits as Secretary of State, since his run ends with Obama’s in January 2017.
Kirby’s press release indicated that Morocco is only one of his final destinations that week, as he is scheduled to travel to Antarctica, New Zealand, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Peru all from November 10 to November 18.
