Rabat – During his visit to Marrakech, King Mohammed VI on Wednesday surprised the employees of a guesthouse, known better in Arabic as a “riyad,” in the Mellah neighborhood of the city.
“I heard the door bell and I did not expect that the king would be the one ringing,” Omar, the riyad’s guardian said in a video. Omar went on to add that “the king asked me about the total number of rooms in the Riyad and our various amenities.”
“I have never seen such humility. He is truly the king of the people, the king of the poor,” Omar continued.
The manager of the Riyad, who was also surprised by the unexpected visit of the king disclosed, in the same video, that “the Riyad is owned by a German businesswoman. [In the past,] the riyad had been housed by Jewish and Muslim families.”
The manager went on to add that “the king liked the refurbished architecture of the riyad,” which was renovated in 2010.
On Wednesday, King Mohammed VI also visited several of Marrakech’s historical sites, which were rehabilitated as part of the first phase of the El Mellah Neighborhood Urban Redevelopment Project.
The king also launched the restoration project of the touristic Ben Youssef square route, as well as that of Jamaâ El Fna.
