Rabat – The charges levied against Saad Lamjarred in the United States were officially dismissed on Friday, according to the plaintiff’s attorney, Rifat Harb.
Lamjarred’s U.S. charges date back to 2010, when a U.S. woman pressed charges against him, accusing him of rape. Earlier this month, however, it was announced that the plaintiff had renounced all civil and criminal proceedings against Lamjarred. But the court still hadn’t.
Today, the woman’s attorney confirms that all the charges against Lamjarred have been dropped both by the woman and the court. Speaking to Al Arabiya English, Harb said, “Saad’s case in the US was officially dismissed today. He now will have a very strong argument to ask for bail in the matter pending in France.”
Harb went on to say that “the prosecutor, Alana Tierney, has told Supreme Court Judge Michael Gary that her office cannot proceed with the case without the cooperation of my client.”
“The case in New York is over and extradition of Saad to the U.S. is no longer going to happen, so the French court has no more official hold to deny his release. His next court date in Paris is December 28, 2016,” Harb added.
Lamjarrad’s sexual assault case in France, which started last October when Laura Prioul, a 20-year-old French woman, accused him of ‘aggravated sexual assault,’ has been ongoing for nearly two months. While he awaits his day in court on this charge, Lamjarred is still being detained at the Fleury-Merogis prison.
Just before he was about to take the stage on October 31 at the Palace of Congress in Paris, an important moment for many artists, Lamjarred was arrested for the second time on charges of sexual assault, this time at the Marriot Hotel in Paris.
Lamjarred was set to appear in court Friday, December 23.
