Report: Migration, Mobility Key Elements of Morocco-EU Partnership

Rabat – African and European ambassadors accredited to Morocco were briefed, on Tuesday in Rabat, on Morocco’s migration policy following the launch of the second phase of the operation of regularizing the situation of undocumented immigrants.

This operation “stems from a deep conviction” of Morocco of the need to serve the African peoples, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Nasseer Bourita, said during a meeting with ambassadors of sub-Saharan and European countries accredited to the Kingdom.

On this occasion, he recalled the speech addressed by King Mohammed VI to the Nation on August 20 in which the Sovereign has given special attention to migration issues.

In this speech, the King affirmed that Morocco “has long rejected the methods adopted by some to address migration issues and which have turned out to be a failure”, Bourita recalled.

This kind of meetings are justified by the important role of the ambassadors in this operation and are part of an “African sequence initiated by the King for some months in some African countries”, and which was marked by the launch of several important projects and the strong involvement of Morocco in several African issues”, the minister pointed out.

In a similar meeting with these ambassadors, Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior, Cherki Drais, said that the issue of migration is “not only a major national and international collective issue, but an essential paradigm in the (…) societal shaping of a country and an eloquent reference to its diversity and richness of identity”.

The “strong” initiative of HM the King to launch the second phase of the operation of regularizing the situation of undocumented immigrants constitutes “a new founding step in the anchoring of singular national migration governance”, Drais said, noting that this “inclusive” and solidarity-based migration policy is the continuation of a long process of historical achievements and institutional maturation”.

“Since the beginning of the millennium, Morocco has been the confluence of an important human, cultural and civilizational mix, consolidating its vocation of diversity, tolerance and openness and its capacity to integrate the other”, he stressed.

King Mohammed VI has given His high instructions to launch the second phase of the operation of regularizing the situation of undocumented immigrants.

The first stage of this operation (2014) benefited some 25,000 migrants, mainly from sub-Saharan countries.
