Rabat – Following the civil war-driven destruction of Syria and the on-going carnage in Aleppo, scores of Moroccans gathered outside the parliament building Wednesday to stand in solidarity with the Syrian people and denounce the desperate predicament in which they find themselves.
The sit-in’s preparation started on social media after widespread and heartbreaking photos, posts and hashtags were posted showing the innocent civilians being besieged, terrorized and killed in Aleppo.
Moroccans took to the streets carrying photos, waving Syrian flags and placards that read: #Save_Aleppo, #Aleppo_Is_Burning, #Stand_With_Aleppo and Save the Syrian Children.
In an interview with Hespress, member of the Reform and Unity Movement (RUM), Mohammed Boulouaz, said, “The sit-in is an outcry from Moroccans who express their displeasure with the failure of the officials [to show their support] towards the Syrian people.”
“The Syrians demand only democracy, transparency and the change of its dictatorial regime. These are legitimate demands,” he added.
Boulouaz continued his remarks, saying, “What is happening in Syria is shameful. The International Community has to wake up from its hibernation and the very least that it can do is to stage a symbolic sit-in to denounce the [massacres] and to show that [the heart of] humanity is still beating.”
Since the beginning of the Syrian revolution amid the so-called Arab Spring, the toll death has reached over 312,000 people, including more than 90,000 civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor.
