Casablanca – According to a newly published report, conducted by the Euro Mediterranean Forum of Institutes of Economic Sciences (FEMISE), Morocco has the potential to create between 270,000 and 500,000 jobs in the field of renewable energy.
Interest and investment in renewable energy business is growing in an impressive manner. Such growth does not only create more jobs, but also creates self-sufficient and independent local communities.
The report states that “Despite the difficulties of some countries, the prospects for the Mediterranean region are not unfavorable, particularly for the ER sector. FEMISE researchers estimate that about 270,000 to 500,000 jobs could be created in Morocco by 2040, in the field of renewable energies.”
The report also sheds light on some alarming problems that Mediterranean countries like Morocco, Turkey and Tunisia are expected to face in the future. The decrease of natural resources, therefore, such as water supply is more likely to impose a great pressure on the economies of these countries. Consequently, investing in renewable energy can create great opportunities.
The preliminary findings of the reports were presented at COP22 in Marrakech on November 15th, 2016. The final copy consists of 143 pages and reflects on a number of issues including the risk of population displacement due to rising sea levels, the unexploited potential and resources in the Southern Mediterranean, new economic and social realities following the Arab Spring and, most importantly, opportunities for green energy in the Mediterranean.
