Rabat – Augsburg forward Robin Fellhauer scored the fastest goal in Bundesliga history on Saturday after capitalizing on a costly mistake by Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer just eight seconds into their league encounter.
The historic goal came during the fifth round of the German Bundesliga, when Augsburg hosted Bayern Munich. The home side needed only seconds to take the lead, catching the visitors off guard before the match had properly begun.
The move started with Bayern taking the kickoff and passing the ball back to Neuer. However, the experienced goalkeeper struggled to deal with the ball while positioned away from his goal line.
Fellhauer quickly spotted the opportunity, closed down the goalkeeper, and took possession before Neuer could regain control. The Augsburg forward then sent the ball into the unguarded net, giving the hosts an early advantage.
The goal was timed at the sixth second, according to reports, breaking the previous Bundesliga record by three seconds.
Fellhauer Breaks Long-Standing Bundesliga Record
Before Saturday’s match, the record for the fastest goal in Bundesliga history was jointly held by Kevin Volland and Karim Bellarabi, who had both scored after nine seconds.
Volland set the record while playing for Hoffenheim against Bayern Munich in August 2015. Bellarabi reached the same mark with Bayer Leverkusen against Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of the 2014-15 season.
Fellhauer’s strike therefore established a new benchmark in the German top flight, with the Augsburg forward taking advantage of an unusual defensive lapse to make history.
The goal also placed Neuer under immediate scrutiny, as the Bayern captain’s mistake allowed Augsburg to score before either side had settled into the contest.
Neuer Faces Questions Over His Form and Future
The incident has renewed attention on Neuer’s recent performances and the challenges facing the veteran goalkeeper as he advances in his career.
The 40-year-old remains one of the most influential goalkeepers of his generation. His ability to operate outside the penalty area and contribute to his team’s build-up play helped redefine the modern goalkeeping role.
However, Saturday’s mistake provided a costly reminder of the risks associated with playing far from the goal line, particularly when an opponent presses aggressively.
Neuer is playing his 21st season as a professional footballer and has previously indicated that the current campaign could be his last.
His future at Bayern Munich remains a major talking point as the German international approaches the later stages of his career.
Neuer has already brought his international career to an end following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the report. His final tournament with Germany ended with an early elimination after a defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32.
Despite his achievements throughout his career, the record-breaking goal conceded against Augsburg has added another talking point to discussions surrounding the veteran goalkeeper’s form and potential retirement.
