Casablanca – A video of a Moroccan student talking about the suffering that she and her fellow students endure at school, has gone viral on social media, attracting sympathy and denunciation.
The bitterness with which a young student described her daily suffering to reach school, and the deplorable situation of the school itself, which is located in a village in the area of Tangier, has led social media users to denounce the total disregard students in rural areas suffer in Morocco.
The student said that her school lacks basic conditions like toilets, doors, and windows. She added that the teachers are also suffering a great deal.
The videotape shows shocking scenes the schools in ruins, a small two-room building that does not appear like a school at all. The walls are half-destroyed or half-built, there are no windows or toilets, and the floor is completely destroyed. There are no tables, nor any sign that the edifice is actually a school.
The description of the young student and the shocking footage are almost identical. The school yard is ample with stones and broken glass, and the rickety shape of the building makes one only imagine the students’ suffering when it rains.
The student continued, aggrieved, to describe the lamentable situation where she and her peers study. She said that the absence of the doors and windows caused two of her classmates to be stung by venomous insects. She added that her classmates were about to die, “had it not been for two teacher who saved them” as they rushed them to the hospital with their own cars.
The student called upon the authorities to come and verify the conditions of their “school,” and asked, “Why do we have to go through this situation? Who has the ability to change this? And why does he not do anything about it?”
Paradoxically, the school is few meters away from Tanger Med Port, Morocco’s largest port in Tangier and third biggest in the area. Numerous multi-national are also planted in the area, such as Renault.
