Moroccan Move: Late in Life, French-Expats Choose Southern Sun

By Safaa Kasraoui

Rabat – A recently aired France2 report entitled “Morocco: The Golden Retreat” discusses the thousands of French retirees who’ve chosen to permanently resettle in cities across the country.

The six-minute video reports that Morocco’s favorable climate and low cost of living have attracted a slew of French seniors looking to live out their retirement in comfort.

Long time visitors and recent new residents of Agadir, Patrick and Nicole, describe their move as “..our reward, a lifetime reward,’’ The couple notes that Morocco’s well-priced real estate and high living standards make life in the country especially attractive.

Another french couple, having resettled in Agadir 3 years ago, also cite enhanced living standards as a reason for their move, “It is good to buy a vacation home in France, but at a certain age people have to live. I don’t believe that people at our age are able to take a loan for a house.’’

The report lists Morocco’s relative safety as an additional draw for potential European retirees. While the threat of terrorism has deterred European visitors from settling in other countries in the region, Morocco’s impressive security track record has allowed the country to maintain its reputation as a prime travel destination.

Though several of the clip’s interviewees ascribe their comfort in Morocco not only to the country’s level of safety, but also to its welcoming society, which has made integration into daily life easy and enjoyable.
