Rabat – The Primary Court in Tetouan has opened an investigation concerning acts of animal cruelty against an eagle carried out by a group of youth in Tetoune, announced the High Planning Commission for Water, Forests and the Fight Against Desertification (HPC).
HPC clarified that the group of juveniles behaved in a “very irresponsible” way, which led the elements of the High Commission to request an investigation into incident that lead to the capture of the eagle and to take the necessary legal actions against the offenders.
The eagle was immediately rescued and treated by the HPC and Ghirboum, a bird protection group.
After its recovery, the eagle was freed to the wilderness, alongside five other birds of its kind, stated HPC.
The announcement also pointed out that the eagles that have been freed in the region as part of perpetuation of the International Day of Wetlands in Tangier will remain under constant surveillance, with a guarantee to provide food supplements while they continue to adapt to life in the wild.
Through its national long-term strategy to protect wild animals and plants and carry out international agreements to protect endangered species, the HCP seeks to preserve migratory species and ensure biodiversity, explained the commission.
