Chafik Chraibi: “Young People Need Urgent Sex Education"

By Safaa Kasraoui

Rabat- Casablanca hosted an educational seminar on human sexuality on March 20.

The seminar, entitled “Sex, What if we talk about it and discuss it?”, brought Moroccan experts together to discuss sex education as a way to inform youth about the human body and help children avoid fears and discomfort resulting from inaccurate information.

During his talk at the event, president of the Moroccan in Plural Association, Ahmed Ghayat, explained that the seminar’s goal is to sensitize the public, especially youth about the importance of opening discussions related to sexual education.

According to the seminar speakers, young people are brought up around sexual mental images and discourses in the environment they live in, and so their their questions related to this issue should not be avoided, and the answers ought to clarify and not confuse the issue.

“Sexual education, unfortunately is considered a taboo or what is referred to in the Moroccan dialect ‘Hachouma’, but in fact this issue is very important for several reasons,” said Head of the Moroccan Association for the Prevention of Abortion, Chafik Chraibi.

He went on to add that “this genre of education allows people to avoid sexual intercourse relations […] as well as the unwanted pregnancy, which often have serious social consequences, especially the use of secret abortions.”

According to Chraibi, half of the Moroccan population start sexual intercourse without being prepared for it.

He also pointed out that “young people need urgent sex education so that they can find their right path in a world where media and education do not provide effective guidance related to the issue.”

On the other hand, radiology specialist and anthropologist, Chakib Guessous explained his point of view regarding this issue saying that sexual education does not mean promoting sexual intercourse.

“Sex education is necessary and should be first taught indoors by knowledgeable parents, and then at school through sensitization lessons,” he added.
