Rabat – A video posted on YouTube on Sunday shows how Polisario is illegally staging checkpoints in the buffer zone of Guergarate, in Moroccan Sahara, threatening human life and disturbing trade.
The video, which was filmed by one of the Polisario’s supporters, shows Polisario members at a checkpoint halting a Moroccan truck heading to Mauritania carrying merchandise.
A voice over in the video claims that the drivers “invade” the area, while indeed, Polisario is occupying and disturbing trade in Guergarate.
They also ignore the call made by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who urged both Morocco and Polisario to “exercise maximum restraint and take all necessary steps to avoid escalating tensions.”
The nearly one-minute video shows the militias attempting to violate the UN’s 1991’s ceasefire agreement.
Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation issued a statement on Sunday, announcing Morocco’s unilateral withdrawal from the Guerguerat region.
Morocco’s decision to withdraw from Guerguerate has been lauded by France, Spain, the UN and the European Union.
Last week, King Mohammed VI called upon Guterres to take urgent and necessary measures to put an end to an unacceptable situation seriously threatening the UN-brokered ceasefire and stability in the region of Guergarate.
