Rabat – “Morocco’s return to the African Union (AU) will make a remarkable contribution to this exhilarating undertaking of solidarity among the African peoples”, said Alpha Condé, the president of the Republic of Guinea and acting president of the African Union, on Monday in Meknès.

This statement was made during the opening ceremony of the 9th National Agriculture Conference, in which he is the guest of honor.

Condé lauded the return of Morocco to its African family at a time when the latter has decided to make solving its own problems “by itself” a top priority.

“Morocco’s example will convince some African countries of the fact that the development of our countries, regardless of their wealth in terms of mineral raw materials, hinges on the development of our agricultures,” Condé underlined.

The Guinean President also expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI and the Morocco “for their constant readiness to keep us abreast of the various fields, in particular the establishment of a mobile laboratory for soil and the launch of a convoy to promote the enrichment of Guinean agriculture and our current supply of 100,000 tons of fertilizers, as well as multiple other initiatives to enhance capacity at different levels. ”

Condé praised the positive impact of Plan Maroc Vert strategy on developing of Moroccan agriculture, combating poverty and ensuring food security.

Agriculture, the primary economic activity in more than 95 percent of African countries, has help create 35 percent of direct employment opportunities in the continent and provides 70 percent of the income of the population, he said. He stressed the need to give priority to agricultural development given its impact on economic growth and the fight against poverty.

The theme of this year’s edition, “Agriculture and food security along the water”, was intended to focus the progress of the Plan Maroc Cert which, since its launch in 2008, has prioritized the rational use of water resources.

The National Agriculture Conference conference aims to foster south-south and inter-African cooperation towards the sustainable development of agriculture and food security in Africa and all over the world. It strives to sensitize and mobilize farmers as well as decision-makers and public opinion on the imperative of efficient and environmentally friendly water management.
