Rabat – King Mohammed VI has sent a message of condolence to Egyptian President, Abdelfattah Al-Sisi, following the ISIS-led terrorist attacks on places of worship on Sunday in the cities of Tanta and Alexandria.
In his message, the King said he had learned with great emotion and deep indignation the sad news of these heinous acts against places of worship that resulted in the deaths of dozens of innocent victims.
The Sovereign expressed Morocco’s strong condemnation of these criminal acts, perpetrated in an attempt to undermine the security and the stability of Egypt. The message reiterated the Kingdom’s full, brotherly solidarity with the Egyptian people and Morocco’s full support for international efforts aimed at fighting terrorism.
On this solemn occasion, the King expressed to the Egyptian President, the bereaved families and the Egyptian people, his heartfelt condolences and sincere compassion for all involved. He also offered his prayers to God to hold the victims in His Holy Mercy and to grant their families patience and comfort, before wishing the injured a prompt recovery.
On Sunday, two Egyptian Coptic Christian churches were targeted by suicide bombers. According to the BBC, the first attack occurred when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest near the altar inside St. George’s Coptic Church in Tanta, located approximately 100 kilometres outside of Cairo. The blast killed 27 worshippers and injured approximately 80 others.
The second suicide bomber detonated his vest outside St. Mark’s Coptic Church in Alexandria. Leader of the Coptic Church, Pope Tawadros II, was attending mass inside the church when the blast occurred but escaped the blast unhurt. other worshippers were not so lucky. 17 of them were killed and dozens more were injured.
