Rabat – Ahmed Zefzafi, the father of Nasser Zefzafi, the arrested leading activist of Al Hoceima’s Hirak protests movement, has called on the government to “abolish all the prosecutions against political activists detainees.”
Surrounded by a large crowd during a large protest Tuesday evening in Hay Abed in Al Hoceima, the father took the mic to deliver a speech.
“Please excuse me, because I am not ready to give a talk or give advices, but I came here to reassure [you] about the continuation of the Hirak and inform you about the letter of Nasser Zefzafi and the comrades” who were arrested with him, his father said. “Your brothers in the Rif, other cities, and Europe are with you.”
Zefzafi’s father went on to address the protesters, expressing his gratitude for those “who were always backing Zefzafi.”
“I can’t thank you all enough. Thanks to all [the people] across Moroccan cities and our expat brothers who took to the streets to stand in solidarity with Nasser,” the father added.
Speaking in standard Arabic, the father concluded his three-minute speech calling on the protesters to protest peacefully.
“What I have to stress is, as Nasser Zefzafi said, ‘peaceful and peaceful and peaceful and peaceful,’ ” the father repeated urging the protesters to stage peaceful demonstrations.
Over the past few days, the tensions have grown in Al Hoceima following the police’s pursuit and arrest of Zefzafi after he interrupted a Friday sermon.
Zefzafi was arrested on Monday and transferred to Casablanca for investigation. He has been charged with “obstructing the right of worship” and “undermining state security.”
The seven months of protests came following the October death of Mouhcine Fikri, a fishmonger who was crushed to death in a trash compactor while attempting to retrieve merchandise discarded by authorities.
