Toronto – Last week, the Washington Post reported that investigators in the Russia inquiry had singled out and “identified a current White House official as a person of interest.” On Saturday, numerous news agencies have revealed this person to be none other that Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump and one of his closest advisors.
When Trump embarked on his first official foray outside of US borders, he left behind a simmering pot of political stew threatening to boil over. Even as he was being feted by Saudi Arabian officials, news was breaking across the globe that the so-called Russia investigation has zeroed in on the heart of the Trump administration, his family.
Son-in-law and husband to First Daughter, Ivanka, Jared Kushner has been named as the “person of interest” in the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump and Russia ahead of and following Trump’s election win.
Sources in the Washington Post article indicated that the investigation had shifted into a new, less secretive, phase saying the investigative journey has moved from “work that has remained largely hidden from the public to conducting interviews and using a grand jury to issue subpoenas. The intensity of the probe is expected to accelerate in the coming weeks.”
On Saturday, New York magazine was quoting one of their contributors, Yashar Ali, as saying “It’s Jared Kushner. Have confirmed this with four people. I’m not speculating.”
Contacts between Kushner and Russian officials have already been uncovered and, earlier in the year, Kushner agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
Last week former head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Robert Mueller, was announced to head the investigation following the unceremonious firing of former Director, James Comey. News of the appointment inspired anger in Trump, who took to Twitter to complain about not being consulted or informed ahead of the announcement. He claimed to be the victim of the “single greatest political witch hunt” in American history.
Kushner is being credited as the key architect in an arms deal signed with Saudi Arabia Saturday, worth a purported $110 billion. There are also allegations that Kushner met with the CEO of the Russian bank that helped to finance the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Toronto, Canada. The bank was under US sanctions at the time.
There has been no response from the White House regarding the identification of Kushner as the “person of interest” in the investigation.
