Rabat – Spanish daily newspaper La Razon has highlighted the “rapid growth” of activity in the port of Tangier-Med since its inauguration.

In its Thursday edition, the newspaper noted that container traffic at the port of Tangier-Med stood at 765,647 TEU (Twenty-Feet Equivalent Unit) at the end of the first quarter of 2017, representing an increase of 10.2 percent over the same period in 2016.

The Spanish daily highlighted that the port of Tangier-Med has attracted the world’s largest maritime service companies worldwide since it went into service in July 2007, as indicated by stops of the biggest “Triple E” container ships.

In this regard, La Razon also reported that the port operator APM Terminals will invest the sum of EUR 758 million in a new terminal at the port Tangier-Med II, noting that the extension of this mega-project will make the port complex of Tangier-Med even more productive.

The Tangier-Med port complex was designed to be an efficient and truly integrated port platform for complementary transshipment, import-export and value-added logistics activities. The cargo port lies 40 km east of city of Tangier, along Morocco’s Mediterranean coast. With an initial capacity of 3.5 million shipping containers, the port stands as one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean and the largest in Africa.

The Moroccan governments have allocated important resources to the port, as it represents a development engine for the northern region and a significant tool for economic policy, orienting Morocco towards exports.
