Rabat – After a three-month disappearance from the political scene, Secretary General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) Abdelilah Benkirane will chair a meeting of the General Secretariat of the party on Thursday, June 29.
Amid party frictions following the dismissal of Benkirane as head of government, the highly anticipated meeting is set to discuss the preparation of the party’s next congress, the political situation of the party, and the party’s standpoint about eight months of protests of Al Hoceima.
The upcoming PJD congress will determine whether Benkirane to be elected for the third term of the party.
The General Secretariat has not convened a meeting for more than one and a half months. The party has seen a heated debate over whether to support or oppose the government of Saad Eddine Othmani, who succeeded Benkirane to form the majority coalition.
Othmani’s structuring of the government, which includes six parties, caused an uproar among the PJD membership. Particularly upsetting to PJD members was Othmani’s acceptance of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) to participate in the government, which had previously been rejected by Benkirane and was one of the causes of the six-month deadlock.
In April, after frictions started building among the PJD members, Benkirane described the developments in the party as a “massive earthquake.”
