Rabat – Nearly ten percent of adult Americans believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows, according to Innovation Center of U.S. Dairy.

16.4 million American adults believe that because milk chocolate is brown, it comes from brown cows. Additionally, 48 percent of Americans do not know where milk chocolate comes from at all.

The Innovation Center of U.S. Dairy’s study is not the first to show a lack of agricultural knowledge among Americans.

A previous study in the early 90s showed that one in five American adults did not know that hamburgers were made out of beef, and a substantial segment of the population did not know either what food animals eat or the typical size of American farms, said the Washington Post.

“At the end of the day, it’s an exposure issue,” explained Cecily Upton, cofounder of FoodCorps, an American none-profit agricultural and nutritional education association.

“Right now, we’re conditioned to think that if you need food, you go to the store. Nothing in our educational framework teaches kids where food comes from before that point,” Upton added.

In addition to the misconception that brown cows lactate chocolatemilk, the daily posted a video on its online page referring to “5 Surprising Things Many Americans Get Wrong”, including:

24 percent of Americans do not know that the earth revolves around the sun, according to a research by the National Source Foundation.

The same number of the American population do not know that America gained independence from Britain, according to Marist Post.

Half of the American population can not locate New York on the map, according to National Geographic.

30 percent of Texas’s population, home to almost 28 million individuals, believe that dinosaurs and human beings coexisted, according to Texas university.
