Rabat – Seven Moroccans are likely among the fatalities of fire that broke out in a block of flats in west London on Wednesday morning, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said Friday evening.
“The diplomatic and consular services of the Kingdom of Morocco in London will, from tomorrow, coordinate with the British authorities the necessary procedures to identify the victims,” the Ministry said in a communiqué.
On Wednesday, King Mohammed gave instructions to the Moroccan Embassy and Consulate General in London to monitor the situation and assist the Moroccan nationals who are victims.
Moroccan Mona Qabbani, who survived the tragedy of Grenfel Tower in west London, has stated that a huge number of missing victims are Moroccans, adding that hat the incident was “extremely terrible and frightening,” and that the survivors “lived the worst day in their lives.”
Qabbani, who lived in the 11th flour of the giant building that caught the fire on June 14, said she did not pay attention to the fire and that her friend called her and told her to run away.
“My friend saved me and my kids after she gave me phone call and she told me to run away quickly. Had it been for Allah’s mercy, I would have been dead, especially that the fire was close.”
The fire has left at least 30 people dead, according to Reuters, while other unconfirmed media reports have estimated the number of fatalities as reaching 70.
