Rabat – The Moroccan American Network and Moroccan Center for Peace and Sustainable Development have announced the organization of a Morocco-Africa week in Washington, DC between September 28 and October 3.

According to organizers, the event aims to show the economic and tourism potential of Moroccan regions, as well as the kingdom’s rich diversity, history, and culture.

The history of the Jewish presence in Morocco and of coexistence between Jews and Muslims in the kingdom will be highlighted.

“This is historical [for] us as Moroccan-Americans to showcase Morocco history through technology, expos, music, and stands representing rich heritage and diversity [and] Jewish and [Islamic] co-existence for centuries,” Mohamed Hajjam, the president of the Moroccan American Network, told Morocco World News.

The three Sahara regions, namely Guelmim-Oued Noun, Laayoune-Saquia Lhamra, and Dakhla-Oued Dahab will be the guest of honor of the event. The focus will be on the cultural specificities of the regions and their economic and tourism potentials.

“It is great to be part of this initiative and bring Moroccan Sahara culture [as] part of this Moroccan heritage week in DC as one of the regions. People will learn more about Sahrawi culture.”

Stands will be reserved for three other regions, namely Casablanca-Settat, Marrakech-Safi, and Souss-Massa.

Held under the theme “Morocco, a Gateway to Africa,” the days seeks to shed light on the role Morocco currently plays in Africa in promoting South-South cooperation and sustainable development in the continent.

The event will be a time to celebrate Morocco’s reintegration to the African Union (AU), thanks to a proactive diplomacy led by King Mohammed VI, say organizers.

Morocco-US relations, which date back to 1777 when the kingdom was the first to recognize the United States and an economic agreement between the two countries was concluded, will also be at the heart of the event.
