Rabat – A suspect in the recent Barcelona terror attacks, Youness Abouyaaqoub, was shot and killed by Spanish police on Monday.

The suspect was killed in Los Altos de Subirat near Barcelona.

The 22-year-old Moroccan born Abouyaaquob is the main suspect in the Las Ramblas attack and is believed to be a member of a 12-member cell in connection with the Barcelona attacks.

Early evening on Monday, the Catalan police confirmed on their official Twitter account that they had shot a suspect wearing a belt of explosives. The police did not specify the suspect’s name, but less than an hour later they affirmed that the suspect shot in Los Altos was Abouyaaqoub.

According to Spanish media, Abouyaaqoub’s location was identified with the help of the Los Atlos’ residents.

The Spanish authorities conducted a search for Abouyaacoub earlier this week, thinking that he might have crossed the border between Spain and France following the terrorist attacks.
