Rabat – Five fishermen were rescued by the Royal Gendarmerie on Tuesday after their boat ran aground 10 nautical miles off the Moulay Abdellah coast of El Jadida, reports Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).
The gendarmerie’s rescue helicopter saved the life of the five fishers, including the trawler’s captain, according to a press release issued by the Royal Gendarmerie.
The statement added that two other people were rescued by another fishing vessel that had been sailing in the same zone.
Two fishermen remain missing.
An investigation carried out by the Royal Maritime Police of Jorf Lasfar, revealed that the
incident was caused by a collision between the collapsed trawler, nicknamed “Chargui II,” and another cargo ship, which was in transit along the Atlantic coast.
The Royal Gendarmerie managed to locate and identify the cargo ship. It was caught by Agadir’s Royal Navy after a report was sent by El Jadida’s Royal Gendarmerie following the incident.
The seven rescued fishermen were transferred to the Mohammed VI hospital in El Jadida to receive the necessary care. Further investigations will be conducted in order to determine the circumstances of the incident.
