Rabat – Morocco vs. France quarterfinal ended with a defeat for the Atlas Lions, but also saw clashes in London.
AFP reported that clashes broke out early Friday in central London between fans and police following the game.
The news agency quoted police, who confirmed that one police officer was injured.
AFP said that four people were arrested following the “violent disorder.”
Videos online show clashes between fans and police, while some footage shows supporters throwing bottles and other objects at officers.
A police spokesperson said the incident started after some supporters blocked traffic on Edgware Road near Hyde Park.
“The incident then escalated, with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks,” the police spokesperson said.
The injured officer is believed to have been struck by a glass bottle.
“The group dispersed, and traffic was restored at around 1 a.m.,” the spokesperson added.
Yesterday witnessed disappointment for Morocco following its World Cup exit after a loss to France, which showed strong play and pace throughout the game.
Moroccans expressed disappointment, highlighting mistakes from several players, including Achraf Hakimi.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized that his players did what they could.
He also said that the future will be much better.
