Rabat – France head coach Didier Deschamps paid tribute to Morocco following Les Bleus’ 2-0 victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, hailing the Atlas Lions’ continued rise on the international stage and predicting an even brighter future for the African side.
Speaking after guiding France to a third consecutive World Cup semi-final, Deschamps described Morocco as a team full of quality and potential, while congratulating head coach Mohamed Ouahbi on his work.
“A Lot of Respect for Morocco”
Deschamps admitted he was surprised by Morocco’s starting lineup but acknowledged the tactical idea behind Ouahbi’s approach.
“I was a little surprised by Morocco’s starting lineup,” Deschamps said. “But I tried to understand what they wanted to do, drawing our defenders out without a traditional striker and using pace on the wings.”
He added that France’s control of possession prevented Morocco from becoming dangerous.
“Once we had the ball and stayed disciplined, it didn’t allow them to be dangerous.”
Despite the victory, Deschamps was full of praise for the Atlas Lions.
“I have a lot of respect for this Morocco team.”
“Morocco will have a bright future”
The France coach highlighted Morocco’s impressive recent achievements, pointing to their consistency on the international stage.
“They reached the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar, and now they’ve reached the World Cup quarter-finals again.”
“That tells you they have very good players.”
Deschamps also believes Morocco’s young squad gives the country every reason to be optimistic.
“It’s a young team. Many of their players have only 10 or 15 international caps, apart from Achraf Hakimi, who has more than 100.”
“That makes me believe Morocco will have a future with a smile.”
Third consecutive World Cup semi-final
France’s victory over Morocco secured a third straight World Cup semi-final appearance, a feat Deschamps described as a source of immense pride.
“It’s confirmation,” he said. “There is a lot of pride in reaching a third consecutive World Cup semi-final.”
He praised his players’ resilience after Kylian Mbappé missed an early penalty.
“We weren’t efficient with our early chances, but it didn’t create any doubt in my players’ minds, especially not in Kylian’s.”
“As the match went on, the opponent had to run more, there was more fatigue and more space.”
“We’re on a mission”
Although France remain one step away from another World Cup final, Deschamps insisted his squad is staying grounded.
“We’re only in the semi-finals.”
“We mustn’t think we’ve already reached the top. There’s still another difficult step because it’s the World Cup.”
He stressed that the focus remains on the next challenge rather than dreaming about lifting the trophy.
“We’re taking it one step at a time.”
Today’s victory was one important step, but we know which of the next two matches we’d rather play.”
Deschamps also revealed the mindset driving his squad.
“We’re on a mission.”
“We’re on a mission for this shirt and for all the men, women and children in France who want to see this team win.”
Team spirit behind France’s success
Deschamps credited France’s unity as one of the biggest reasons behind their impressive World Cup run.
“The collective always comes before everything else.”
“Everyone is committed, whether they’re on the pitch or not.”
He also dismissed suggestions that captain Kylian Mbappé is an individualistic player.
“Many people think Kylian only thinks about himself.”
“That’s completely false. As captain, he’s exemplary.”
“When Ousmane Dembélé scored his hat-trick, Kylian was just as happy as if he had scored it himself.”
Eyes on the semi-finals
While Deschamps welcomed another milestone in his remarkable tenure, he warned that France’s work is far from over.
“When you’re in the semi-finals, you’re among the four best teams in the world.”
“But our objective is to go all the way.”
“We’ll find out tomorrow who our next opponent will be, and then we’ll prepare for another very difficult match.”
