Morocco Sends Humanitarian Aid to Sierra Leone After Flooding

Rabat – King Mohammed VI has ordered humanitarian aid to be sent to Sierra Leone to support victims of flooding in the country, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The aid was delivered to Sierra Leone’s capital by the Moroccan armed forces (FAR). It consisted of 66 tons of food, tents, and medications for cholera.

According to Maghreb Arab Press (MAP), the humanitarian action is part of the strong friendship and solidarity that ties the kingdom and Sierra Leone.

On August 14, more than 450 people were confirmed dead and at least 600 people remain missing after huge landslide of mud engulfed Sierra Leon’s capital, Freetown.

The heavy flooding began in at 3:00 a.m. on Monday, when many people were asleep. International media sources said that at least 2,000 people were left homeless as the flooding brought down their properties. Other people were found buried under the mud, said Sierra Leone’s Disaster officials.

The city’s streets and districts were turned into muddy rivers.

Victor Foh, Sierra Leone’s vice-president told Reuters that “it is possible that hundreds of bodies are lying dead underneath the rubble.”

Searches for missing people and bodies have been carried out by citizens, emergency workforce, and military.
