Rabat – An earthquake registering 4.0 on the Richter scale struck the northeastern region of Al Hoceima on Sunday, the National Institute of Geophysics (ING) has announced.
The earthquake struck at around 6:35 am sending mild tremors through the municipality o f Bni Gmil in the province of Al Hoceima, according to a warning bulletin.
The Richter scale ranges between “Micro” (1.0), to “Great” (above 9.0). Tremors with magnitudes of 4.0 are considered “light,” marked by an obvious shaking of objects indoors.
On February 24, 2004, Al Hoceima experienced one of the second worst earthquakes in Moroccan history, 6.3 on the Richter scale.That earthquake caused the death of 572 people.
