Rabat – Following the stampede that occurred on Sunday, King Mohammed VI “gave his high instructions to the competent authorities to take all measures to provide the necessary support and assistance to the families of the victims and the injured,” said a communique of the Ministry of Interior.

Seventeen people were killed and 38 people resulted during the distribution of foodstuff by a local association in the commune of Sidi Boulalam (province of Essaouira).

In order to ease the sufferings of the bereaved families, the Moroccan monarch has also decided to personally pay for the expenses of the burial and funeral of the victims, as well as for the costs of the wounded’s hospitalization, the interior ministry said in a statement.

According to the same source, competent authorities intervened following the incident and ambulances rushed to the scene to evacuate the wounded into Essaouira’s provincial hospital to receive the necessary care.

An investigation was opened under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to determine the causes of the incident, the source said, adding that the interior ministry has opened an administrative inquiry.

Most of the victims are women. They are 14 to have died in this incident. The other three dead are children.

according to Moroccan news outlet Le360, a local philanthropist was preparing to distribute foodstuff to the needy population of this town when he was literally overwhelmed by the crowd.
