Rabat – Morocco’s Atlas Lions are attracting growing attention from the international community, including the media, as only a few days separate the globe from the much-anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Many international news outlets have already begun posting Morocco’s fixtures, previews, and match-related info involving the Atlas Lions.
French news outlet RFI described Morocco as Africa’s finest.
“Morocco arrived at the first 48-team World Cup as Africa’s highest-ranked side in the FIFA standings,” the news outlet wrote.
It recalled that the Atlas Lions are going with a portfolio full of achievements, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
It also recalled Morocco’s achievement as the first African and Arab team to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
“They reached the last four at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, beating Spain on penalties in the round of 16 and defeating a disjointed Portugal side 1-0 in the quarter-finals,” RFI added.
The Associated Press (AP) recalled Morocco’s astonishing run to the semifinals at the tournament in Qatar.
It further emphasized that the Atlas Lions have a challenge as they are facing five-time champion Brazil on June 13 as part of the group stage.
Scotland comes second on June 19 and Haiti on June 24 as part of Group C.
In May, Al Jazeera also commended the Atlas Lions’ football development, describing the country’s football as a powerhouse.
“In Qatar, Morocco were undefeated in every match in which they had less than 50 percent possession, and the only game they lost was against France when they had the lion’s share of the ball. Whether Ouahbi’s more adventurous approach can deliver the same resilience in the knockout rounds remains to be seen,” Al Jazeera wrote.
Ahead of Morocco’s opening game for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the Atlas Lions will embark on their last friendly game as part of a successful campaign in preparation for the global tournament.
On Sunday, Morocco will face Norway, a real-time challenge that will test the Atlas Lions’ skills ahead of the tournament.
Morocco is now ranked seventh in FIFA’s current global standings, although the ranking is considered unofficial until all matches are approved as international “A” matches.
What’s official is that Morocco is indisputably Africa’s best and the only Arab country that reached the semifinals in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
