Rabat – French President Emmanuel Macron praised King Mohammed VI in Burkina Faso on Tuesday for his efforts to fight against extremism.

Macron, who is in Burkina Faso for the opening leg of a three-day Africa tour, said that the time has come to take a stand against religious extremism, which undermines the world’s security.

“It is time today to stop religious extremism. We must leave no space for fighting it by every means in schools, universities, in all forms of citizenship,” said Macron in a speech before the students of Ouagadougou University, adding that religious extremism should be fought “in everyday life, in political speeches, and in action.”

“I want here to pay tribute to the King of Morocco for always finding the right ways, given the eminent role he has,” insisting on the importance of eradicating the financing of extremism.

“All religious were established on a message of love and hope,” said the president. However, he stressed on the need to construct free states. In this respect, the president spoke about “obscurantism” and the grip of religious extremism, believing that it is a much more challenging threat than terrorism, one that has no borders or continents.

“This threat attacks faith and religion to divert its meaning and to transform its transcendence and in denial of other.”

Morocco deliberately works to prevent and control radicalism by ensuring that the practice of Islam remains unified, moderate, and stable throughout the kingdom.
