Rabat – They have done it! The Wydad Casablanca players have won the second CAF Champions League title and the sixth for Morocco after a great game against the Egyptian team Al Ahly, the team that won most title in the tournament with eight title.

On Saturday, Wydad players did not fail dozens of thousands of fans who flocked to the Mohammed V stadium in Rabat, and a way larger number of Moroccan football afecionados, watching in their homes or in cafés all across the kingdom, hoping for the first CAF Champions League title for a Moroccan team since 1999 when Wydad’s historical rival, Raja, snatched the cup from Tunisia against the local team of Espérance.

As expected, it was not an easy win for the Moroccan team against a much more experienced competitor. Throughout the first and second halves of the match, Wydad pressed to score against a well organized Egyptian defense.

Though Wydad created several opportunities to net the goal of their rival, The Egyptians were so closing of scoring in the fisrt half was not for a beautiful save from Zouhir Laaroubi when he found himself face to face with an Egyptian attacker.

Wydad had to wait until the 69 minutes before the scoring thanks to a great teamwork between its rising star, Achraf Bencherki, with dribbled an Egyptian defender with class before sending an assist to Oualid El Karti who fought for a heading against two of the Al Ahly players.

El Karti got the better of the Egyptian defenders, hitting the ball with his head to send inside the goal. The fully packed stadium went crazy. For the remaining minutes, the Moroccans had to fight for their goal. Al Ahly’s desperate attempts did not pay off against a team that was willing to do all that it takes to win his second CAF Champions League title for the first time since 1992.
