Rabat – Moroccan authorities have launched an investigation following reports that a drone remotely controlled by Mexican tourists flew over the royal palace and various sensitive sites in Rabat on Sunday.
The judicial police announced that a drone flew over the Royal palace, the constitutional court, as well as military and security premises.
Following the incident, Moroccan police arrested three Mexicans, including a young woman who remotely controlled the drone.
After questioning the defendants who were found on a sightseeing tour at Sounna Mosque, the police confiscated the drone and opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident, reported daily newspaper Assabah.
The drone and its piloting controls were seized by the technical and scientific police to verify their data and to ensure that it did not capture any photos or videos of the royal palace and the other military sites located in the city.
The investigation launched by the judicial seeks to clarify how the drone was allowed into the country via its airports, particularly since instructions were given two years ago to various border control officials in both airports and ports to ban drones in the country.
