Rabat – The Nigerian minister of sports and youth, Solomon Dalung, expressed Thursday his full support for Morocco’s 2026 World Cup bid.

“It is a support for Morocco, but also for Africa, which has only organized the World Cup once in nearly 100 years,” the minister said to Maghreb Arab Press.

Dalung highlighted the support as “beneficial” for the two African countries that are striving to show a positive image to the world and consolidate their leadership in football. He pointed out that Morocco is “renowned for its stability, hospitality and prosperity”

The Nigerian minister emphasized that Morocco and Nigeria need to develop cooperation in all areas, notably sports and youth.

“We believe in the potential of Morocco and Africa in all sectors, we believe that football can be a way to facilitate cooperation and consolidate the development of partnership relations,” Dalung said.

Nigeria is not the first country to announce its support for Morocco’s 2026 World Cup bid. Three weeks ago, the president of the Confederation of African Football, Ahmad Ahmad, announced his support for Morocco’s World Cup bid for the second time.

In a press conference held in Casablanca on Jan. 13, Ahmad said “There is no room for discussions. As CAF president, it is an obligation for me to support Morocco’s bid.”

The first time was three days after Morocco’s candidacy submission, Ahmad called on heads of football confederations in Africa to show support for Morocco’s bid. The CAF president said that it is a must for Africans to show “clear” and “massive” support for Morocco as it is determined to become the second African country to host the football event.

Fouzi Lekjaa, president of Morocco’s Royal Football Federation, confirmed in a press conference held in Casablanca on Tuesday that Morocco’s bid to host the 2026 World Cup represents the African continent as a whole.
