Rabat – King Mohammed VI contribution to the rehabilitation of the cemeteries of Moroccan-born Jews in Cape Verde was highly lauded during a ceremony held during the weekend in North Bethesda, Maryland.

The ceremony was hosted by the Sephardic synagogue Magen David, with the support of the embassies of Morocco and Cape Verde. During the event, the attendees paid a homage the King for his contribution to the restoration and preservation of the Jewish heritage in Morocco and abroad.

“We are very grateful to HM King Mohammed VI, President of the NGO Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project (CVJFP) Carol Castiel told Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).

“Without this contribution in 2011, this project would never have been possible,” she added.

Castiel also noted that in June 2015, a delegation of Jews from Cape Verde made a trip to  Morocco at the initiative of the Ministry of Moroccans Living Abroad and Migration Affairs, expressing admiration for the warm welcome they received, added MAP.

The president of the NGO also underscored the importance of the contribution of Moroccan researchers, especially the historian Mohamed Kenbib for his work on the memory of the Jews of Cape Verde.

The event was marked by the presence of the Cape Verdean vocalist Gardena Beneros, who was the guest of honor of the evening. Several diplomats from Portuguese-speaking countries, including Cape Verde’s ambassador, Carlos Wahnon Veiga and the head of public diplomacy at the Moroccan Embassy in Washington, Larbi Rmiki, were also in attendance.
