Rabat – King Mohammed VI has congratulated Abdelhakim Benchamach on his re-election as speaker of the House of Councillors at Parliament.
The King expressed confidence in Benchamach, owing to his expertise and “strong commitment to the nation’s long-standing and supreme values.”
The monarch believes that Benchamach will “redouble his efforts for further action” with all members of the House of Councillors “to consolidate the constructive contribution of this institution.”

The King also called on the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors to collaborate to “promote parliamentary action in accordance with the sovereign’s aspirations to see institutions act in the interests of the nation and its citizens, and strengthen the role of the upper house to ensure quality legislation, effective monitoring, relevant public policy assessment and active parliamentary diplomacy.”
On Monday, members in the House of Councillors voted in Benchamach as their speaker for a second term.
Benchamach won 63 votes; his PJD competitor, Nabil Chikhi, won just 19.
Benchamach is the head of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM). He succeeded the former secretary-general of PAM, Ilyas El Omari, in May 2018.
