Rabat – Authorities in Sudan have intercepted an aircraft belonging to Moroccan mining company Managem for carrying 84 kilograms of gold, a number of Sudanese news outlets have reported.

A source inside the Sudanese military told Russian news agency Sputnik that the aircraft was intercepted because it didn’t hold a valid license.

While the aircraft “lacked authorisation” for carrying the quantity of gold it was intercepted with, the incident had nothing to do with contraband concerns, according to the Sudanese officer.

The same source was quoted as saying, “The plane that was transporting gold belongs to the Moroccan company Managem, and was heading to Khartoum, from the Saharan region of Qabqa, to the west of the River Province of the Nile”.

They also said that usually it would be the responsibility of the Economic Security to control authorisation given to transportation vehicles wishing to transport production from mining areas.

Given recent governmental changes, however, “the mission is currently being carried out by the rapid support force”.
