Rabat – The Egyptian embassy in Morocco confirmed to Morocco World News today, January 3, that the victim of the mass sexual harassment incident in Al Mansoura, Egypt on new year’s was not Moroccan.

“Security services in Egypt confirmed to us that the woman was not a Moroccan national,” the Egyptian embassy told MWN.

The embassy did not confirm whether the woman was an Egyptian national.

Initial reports suggested that the victim was a Moroccan national after the video went viral on social media.

The video caused uproar across the Arab world, documenting the moment when a horde of Egyptian men sexually harassed a young woman.

The video shows the victim screaming for help.

The 20-year old woman, a university student in Al-Mansoura, was with her friends celebrating new year’s eve in the neighborhood.

A group of men started cat-calling and filming them before a second group intervened to help the two women.

The tension escalated, with the main victim trying to hide in a shop.

The owner, however, forced her to leave the place after crowds surrounded the property.

El Watan News quoted the victim, who said that she was walking in the street when the incident happened.

“I was surprised when I saw men taking photos and videos of me and my friend with their phones,” she said.

“I started running and I hid in the shop so I can talk to my family to come and find me. The men were surrounding the place and they started to insult me with all kind of insults,” the woman added.

She added that she left the shop immediately and she found herself surrounded by a group of people who ripped her clothes.

“I left the place without being able to speak a word… I was scared and I did not know what to do until I found videos on Facebook. Police came to my house and I know that the incident became public,” she added.

Police managed to identify a group of people involved in the incident, with several arrests.

The video is still going viral, with Twitter users sweeping hashtag #AlMansouragirl to condemn the attack.
